The “Carolina Covenant” Education Welfare
The Carolina Covenant student aide program covers the total cost of attending UNC for students of families whose total income is 200% or less below the federal poverty line. Clearly these students would otherwise have tremendous difficultly paying for their education. The covenant removes the financial barrier to attending college. Unfortunately, I cannot support such a program. A college education is a privilege, not a basic need by any means. Allowing access to students of “historically low income” families is an investment in potentially breaking that cycle of under-achievement yet the program descriminates against those who don’t meet the dramatically low income levels yet still cannot otherwise afford college. Outside of the absolutely well-off, families of all income levels struggle with the high cost of college. If one happens to be poor but not poor enough then one has to find their own means to attend college.
